All OSes have viruses, even linux. It's just a matter of time for the virus writers to create one for any "new" OS. Windows has prolific exploits and viruses only because it is itself prolific. If Linux were as widely used, you'd see more linux viruses.

I've heard this many times, but I still don't agree with it. I think that windows has most of it's problems due to design, i.e. a single user OS being shoehorned into a multiuser role. That and poor security out of the box. Who the hell makes all users default to root (er, administrator) on creation? Really, it's just a bad design.

But yea, any OS is vulnerable, because with some people, you can't fix stupidity.

While there isn't nearly as many viruses in *nix as there is Windows, there are just as many exploits. I have to see them, and deal with them all the time.

Just like in windows, most of the patches/upgrades to things other than the kernel that you have to do on a *nix box are security/exploit related. *nix also has the problem that too many applications have to be run as ROOT, not a pseudo-root, but as root. At least in windows you can set up another account as an admin and use that for running applications. And I guarantee you a properly secured W2K3 server is as or more secure than a properly configured *nix box.

Chroot, jail, usermode linux, the above is not really a problem.

Well then you tell our Senior Unix Admin's that. Cause I'm sure their over 15 yrs experience, and 80K+ salaries, and the fact they run the systems that let you make a 9-1-1 call makes them clueless in this stuff. (Cause I've beat them up about it). Of course we don't run any of our critical system on Linux, they are running Sun's.)

http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/content/zones/

(only in 10, btw, but the ability is there. I understand that older systems and infrastructure are reluctant to upgrade from what works. I'm sure your admins work with what they are given.)

Our V120 at work is sitting @ 180 days uptime. good stuff...

Actually I know we have some new 10 boxes, and I think they are doing these Zone things. However I am pretty sure they just "virtual" OS'es running. While that offers more segmentation in the OS (which is good, and does add more security) I still believe they have to run many app's as root.

I still think I'm going to read up more on this (thanks for the link) to see what all the security ramifications and benefits are. Laughing If it's good enough I might try to start pushing all the boxes on this Grin
