Not to contradict what LaTech said about VNC, I've had much better luck using it over Remote Desktop.

But if using a firewall, you have to make sure both TCP & UDP ports 5800 and 5900 are allowed to pass.

Some of the machines I built for my most troublesome "clients" I late installed a lite version of VNC Server so that I can avoid a house call.

I use Ultra VNC, but only inside my home network... Mainly to help our 4 year old when she gets stuck, just so I don't have to get up! Laughing

It's worthwhile checking your 'server' has user inputs, wallpaper, backgrounds etc disabled in the vnc console to aid speed.

Hey Knight...I never said I was a pro! There are always other options and things people haven't tried...glad VNC works well for someone!

For me to get VNC to work, I found that port 443 wasn't closed, and tunneled through that port. Could have caused some of my lag issues, I guess.

No, VNC blows. I mean it works and all. But it's crap compared to RDP. RDP is a much faster, and better, and more secure protocol.

With of course the understanding that remote control in general is not considered secure.

It must be just me.. Remote Desktop always gave me fits. lol

Generally I can walk someone over the phone or IM app on installing and setting up VNC. ...even the "Computer Challenged". once running, I set a few parameters and password lock it. ...so the next time they have issues, all I need is their IP addy.

Don't lie. VPS over a secure tunnel can be secure. SSH is secure in Linux. RDP.....well, nothing for that.

But I haven't had any problems with RDP connecting with other PCs in the LAN and from home to work. The only thing RDP lacks is multiple logins, atleast on XP Pro. IIRC, the Terminal Services in Windows 2003 allow multiple RDP connections, but not sure.

I don't call SSH remote control... not really at least. And don't pretent that SSH is a linux thing either. You can SSH to Windows boxes, routers, firewalls, switches, ect, ect, ect....

Also you can run mutiple RDP sessions on servers, and of course Term servers.

And knight, the reason I like RDP over VNC is it is much faster, actually is pretty secure (there is an exploit but it is almost impossible to do), and requries no additional install in Win 2000 and higher.
