Does anyone here has experience with using Remote Desktop? I'm looking for software with a lot of features/functionality. Will the Remote Desktop embedded into Windows XP allow me to do much from the remote location? I need to be able to open up a few programs while logged into the remote desktop. I googled some possiblities as to software I could use but Im looking for someone with bona fide experience so that I don't waste days trying to get it to work with crappy software.

I use remote desktop on a daily basis at work.

When I open a remote desktop to my SQL server, I can do anything on that server as if I was sitting there. Obviously it's just a little slower than sitting there.

From my desk (about 400 miles from the server), I installed SQL server 2005, did the configuration, and do all the maintenance from my desk. The ONLY thing I can not do, is put a CD into the computer if I need it. Or power it back on, if I accidentally turn it off, or power goes off that is not caught by the UPS.

The main purpose is macroing skills in a game, Im wondering if I could because it's an older game and runs in a window. The second purpose would be to startup my shoutcast server, but that wouldn't be a problem I'd think?

Hellfire, what program do you use to access your remote desktop?

Windows built in utility, Remote Desktop Connection Grin

Never tried games, since it's a work box behind some major security.

Remember, Remote Desktop will only work if the 'server' pc is running an MS server OS or XP Pro NOT Home (Check details under Remote Desktop on MS site).
Try one of the VNC set-ups if that's the situation.
I'm pretty sure you're 'server" also needs a static IP if it is not part of the same network as the main PC ie your doing this over the internet.
I'm looking at how to control a PC in the UK from OZ Grin

through work everything internet wise is done through a remote connection.... there is lag, thats for sure... if you can deal w/ a lot of lag especially w/ a game then go for it.... its not the most ideal thing to use it for but it does work, just very slowly...

I use Remote Desktop here at work all the time and set up my home computer and this one with VNC. To be honest, if you can help it, don't use VNC. Not much fun behind firewall(s) unless you're good with forwarding ports and have access to that (which I didn't and had to...obtain...rights to)

I use KDesktop to connect to XP Pro's Remote Desktop Service to fix my parents' computers at work from home Smile . I did it mainly for when I go away to college because I'm sure the 2 hour drive time won't convince them I'm really not coming to the rescue every time.

You can see a glimpse of it in the background...I don't feel like taking more snapshots (call me lazy).

Alrighty, good stuff. I just need to log into the game server, the computer takes over from there. Anyone know off the top of their head the port(s) that i'll have to forward to my PC for this? Looking it up now...
