I just acquired a Hayes Accura 56K external modem for $5. It's hooked up to the serial port on my 8RDA+ and currently feeding my addiction.

My problem is, none of the serial port drivers I've found so far (highserial.sys website and SHSMODE website) work with my board. How do I get past 115K?

Also, I have what looks to be an older (could be newer and just used) Accura 56K that uses the parrallel port, would it be faster?

I thought that parallel was faster than serial, but I don't know. I'm about to hook it up and see if I get a higher throughput on a speedtest. If I do, I'll find an uncompressed file to download and see how high it goes.

Any help, suggestions, or guesses are appreciated. Smile

115K is as fast as a serial port goes.... But why would you need to go any higher? That speed is only the speed between the modem and the computer, makes no difference for you ISP speed.

Besides... everything above 33.6K is really smoke and mirrors.

Oh ha ha. Some people live in the boonies and can't get anything faster...

First, 90% or more of new mobos support speeds past 115K. My mobo is most likely one of the ones that can support 921600. Second, add-in "high speed" serial cards run at those higher speeds (up to 921600), but they need to replace the windows driver to do so.

So, what I need is to replace the driver with one that will let me run my mobo port higher than 115K. With compression, it will easily exceed the 115K port speed. It's a bottleneck that needs to be removed.

And, that parallel modem is cooked I guess.

Ok, I got it. The first one, HighSerial.sys, DOES work. I don't know why it didn't the first time, but it works now.

It detects my serial chip and says the max speed is 921600 and it's running at 14MHz (which is what I figured). I know it works because if I pick anything higher than 230K the modem won't work. I guess it's too old for anything higher than that.
