A bit late, but I hope it helps. I use www.tunebite.com. This software records the output of the sound card, and can convert the song from wma, for example, to mp3 thus loosing the DRM protection, and the process is completely legal. And another great feature is that it also enters the ID tags automatically

Does any one buy music online? Like from iTunes, Buy.com, WalMart.com, etc... If so and you burn them to CD, could you then rip them back to the PC and have an unprotected music file?

I like the idea of being able to buy music that I like, but I hate all the copy "protection" sh*t.

I've discovered a great program which kills DRM !!! Mad
http://www.soundtaxi.info
It'll help the customers of iTunes, Napster and Yahoo to listen to their music without any borders
I've converted 100 wma's during 15-17 min! That's 12x speed!
Great result Wave

Vote with your wallet and don't support DRM.

I know it's going to be everywhere soon, but companies are instituting totally idiotic policies regarding it that limit fair use and consumer rights. Ever try returning a CD? What happened to putting out a quality product? "Sorry to find out the music you bought sucks, but you cannot get your money back. Give us more monies."

Sigh.

There is a site called eMusic.com that runs a NON-DRM music sales business.

They don't have all kinds of major label stuff though - in fact, it's entirely made up of albums on independent labels, but check out their list. If you're into Indie, jazz, or classical, they might have a few months worth of tunes for ya. You might even find some of your local bands on there.

I think for $20 a month you get to download 90 songs or something. You can buy booster packs to supplement that if it's not enough, but once you download it, you can put it on anything you own (anything that plays non-DRM music, that is).

Definitely check out their site to see exactly what bands are there. If you're not into that kind of music, then don't bother.

I'm quite happy pulling down The White Stripes, early NiN, Violent Femmes, Pixies, Fugazi, Tom Waits, Black Flag, and of course a few blues albums here and there. RL Burnside is not to be missed. Buddy Guy, Bessie Smith, John Lee Hooker, and Ray Charles have multiple albums there too. I figure I'll get at least a year's worth out of it before I'm done.

It does work, but use CD-RWs or something similar.

Some persons told that Winamp also works. Then, using Winamp's output plugin with CDex and then converting your files again should work.
