K, so it's been a few years since I had to mod a linux box to enable DNS. Someone remind me? I got the resolv.conf file straightened out, I think, but the line that deals with DNS in hosts.conf is beyond my capacity to remember at this moment (It's sad that I can honestly say I've forgotten more about computers than some people will ever learn). Would someone mind posting their hosts.conf line for DNS? I think it's like "order hosts, server, file" or something.

This is my /etc/host.conf:
Code:
order hosts, bind
multi on

/etc/resolv.conf
Code:
nameserver 192.168.0.16
nameserver 192.168.0.23

So when you do nslookup, what does it show? Mine gives me the server ip, sans name and a #53 at the end of the IP. I've never seen this behaviour before.

I believe it shows the #53 as it is the standard DNS port number. This is probably a fairly new behavior.

Code:
jared@jslack:~$ nslookup yahoo.com
Server:         192.168.0.16
Address:        192.168.0.16#53

Non-authoritative answer:
Name:   yahoo.com
Address: 66.94.234.13
Name:   yahoo.com
Address: 216.109.112.135

That's messed up then. My response is...
Code:
[root@qqqq etc]# nslookup www.yahoo.com
Server:         qqq.qqq.qqq.qqq
Address:        q.qq.qq.qq1#53

Non-authoritative answer:
*** Can't find www.yahoo.com: No answer

Yes, I changed the numbers and stuff cause we can't be leaking out IPs now. Crazy

My ping to the DNS works, and other stations on the network are able to resolve names from the server, but this one linux box is hosed up. The resolv and hosts.conf file both compare well to yours. Is there something I'm missing?
