Remember the most important thing is that you place the backups on a different PHYSICAL drive. In your case, I'd put the /home on the 2nd drive and use it for the mySQL DB and all static pages. Then make a /Backup on the 1st drive and backup your info there.

I don't think I want to do it personally, but they don't HAVE to either.

To answer the previous question, in addition to cPanel/WHM access, I do have root access through SSH. I just don't touch much that way, unless I really know what I am doing.

WHM/cPanel is just a GUI for managing the server, and uses the same credentials as SSH, in general.

I agree with Cheeze - Get the backup on the other drive. The /home move should be fairly easy. What OS is this?

Wait... Cheeze... Are you saying to keep it the same, but move /backup and the mySQL dbs to drive sdb?

/dev/sda6 26G 1.7G 23G 7% /
/dev/sda1 198M 25M 163M 14% /boot
/dev/sda3 487M 8.1M 454M 2% /tmp
/dev/sdb1 50G 245M 47G 1% /home
/dev/sda2 15G 264M 14G 2% /var
/dev/sda5 26G 33M 25G 1% /backup

I don't recommend putting MySQL on sdb - MySQL swaps with the hdd a lot. The backup drive should be touched only when necessary.

Yeah, OK... so, swapping /home with /backup would solve everything, right? Then I will just make a folder on the second drive for mySQL and symlinking it back to /var/lib

Right?

No, you want the backup on a different physical drive than the mysql db.

So, keep the backup on sda and home on sdb.

While I agree in theory... he'd need a 3rd hdd to do that. You really don't want the OS & the DB on the same drive.

My only thought is that all the swapping that the db does could compromise the life of the backup drive.

I presently have the backup and databases on the same drive ?:

The backup is only active for a few minutes a day, the rest of the time the drive can focus on handling the dbs.

If one drive or the other goes... All files are available at least from 24 hours of the last backup.
