Misty is right on the tar usage:

tar -c (create) v (verbose, no need for this) z (gzip compression, use j for bzip2) f (file name) [file name] [directory to be tarballed]

So: tar -czf 2004-12-08-my_stuff_backup.tar.gz my_stuff

If you want to find out more about tar or anything else: man tar

Also, use /bin/bash. Grin

I think it is all set, just the way I want it now! It is set to create a gzip archive of the whole site at 3AM everyday, and store the file on the second drive in the server. Each daily backup just has the day in the file name, and when a week is up, that file is overwritten. So, I'll always have a week's worth of backups to look at online, which is what I wanted. Grin

Not with this step. It is backed up though.

Next step is to get that backed up more efficiently. It is part of the daily backup that overwrites itself every night, plus I manually DL it every night.

We aren't allowed to use bash, although I have heard a lot of good things about it. I have to stick to ksh. One of the products I support actually requires me to use csh though.
