http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=27-131-118&depa=0

At only $27.00 shipped, I think your best bet would be to order yourself a new one.

I will however keep an eve out for someone selling one a bit cheaper.

For something cheap like that, Just be safe and order from NewEgg, or go find one locally.

I checked your Mwave drive with shipping to you and it came to 28.05 with ground shipping.

The same drive from Newegg is 27.00 shipped and Newegg is the best in the business bar none.

So unless I have punched in the wrong information in their shipping calculator, Newegg is cheaper.

EDIT... I reread the thread and figured out you were asking if a cheaper drive would do ok. duh...on my part.

Sure, they should all be ok for reading disks, I personally have purchased ~40 liteon drives and have had no failures (I build and sell systems). (Until this NEC Burner that is!!!)

right now i have an io magic 16x dvd+-rw but im not sure what to think about it... it was 130 at circuit city but on black friday it went down to 100 plus a 40 rebate mail in do i thought 60 bux for a 130 dollar drive y not...

im not sure if i like the cd burning on it though... i have kinda mixed thoughts on it... it took a while to finalize the one disc ive actually burned so far...

but yea for now just a cheaper dvdrom so i can start to copy things... right now im still using my sony vaio for copies but no dvdrw

I/O Maagic doesn't make their own Drives... it's probably a BTC. There might be a firmware update for the drive. Try downloading liveupdate from here: http://www.drvupdate.com/ and seeing if there is a firmware update.
