I never tried this before, so I was surprised when it was ok... I was driving along in my Cherokee Sport today, and my thumb got caught on the keys and I pulled them straight out of the ignition... Car didn't care at all, and just kept going... So, then I kept doing it... driving with the keys in my pocket, etc (so I won't leave them in the car, Laughing ). Of course, I have to put them back in to turn the car off, though...

Do all cars do this? And should it? Confused

That is a sign that the ignition switch is getting worn. They are not supposed to come out when in the run position. I have had cars that would do that in the past though. On mine I could turn it off without the keys I just could not start it without them.

LOL Yea, another friends Jeep Chereokee did the same thing. Used to be funny he'd go out in the middle of winter to start it, then walk back into work with his keys LOL

Try this, stick something else in there like a screwdriver and see if it will start it...

Seen it done, but not on a Jeep...

LOL Yea... I've seen it before too... same thing... The ignition key switch is gett'n loose Yikes. Probably won't cause a problem.... but you might look into getting it replaced just in case.... I wouldn't think there would be a hurry though.

My dad had a car you could do that with, and I think it was his Jeep Wagoneer. I don't think you're supposed to be able to though, it's worn out.

No hurry to replace that at all, my dad had a car that did that for all 7 years he had it, and he loved the fact that it was like that and never changes it. Actually I wish my car would do that!!!! Sad

Just did... well, not with a screwdriver, but with a house key... Won't start this way, but will shut off!!

So... I just need my key to start the car, and then can put them in my pocket for safe measure. And, it doesn't even take much to shut it off... I just did it with a nickel!
