I know many of us here use RAID and I was wondering why? We all know if setup correctly you will get some speed benefits, but then your risk of data loss also increases. You win some and you lose some I guess.
I like the idea of the added performance but the reason I really like RAID -- it free's up my IDE ports on the motherboard. It also makes 2 seperate 80GB partitions show up as a solid 160GB, which I love.
I just bought a $87 Hightpoint RocketRAID 454 (PCI -> ATA133) and I guess this is just my way of validating the purchase. Every harddisk deserves its own channel, that's how I see it.

I used to like it for speed... then came the crash! Now I have RAID 1 for security with a nightly backup to my NAS device. No more will be lost...
My plan is to get some SATA drives for my gaming computer, and maybe do RAID 0 there to get the speed back... If so, I'll have 2 more identical drives available for my main rig... Big question... Do I have to reformat and start from scratch to go from RAID 1 to RAID 0+1?

Crash? My system is too sexy for that... *crosses fingers*
I can't answer your question 100%, havne't done that before but I'd think you have to rebuild the array (and therefore most likely have to start from scratch). _________________ - Jim
