I have a FIC 31 mobo that according to the clerk at compusa can take 2100 which I have now or 2700. Clerk tells me there will be no performance difference between the two, is this correct? Asking cause the 2700 mem is cheaper and if I can get some boost in mem power all the better, also the mem I have is Centon I guess the cheap stuff and the 2700 is PNY is that brand just as low quality or should I take a chance and buy something like Kingston or Crucial through a mail order site, I live in Hawaii and returning something costs a lot more than on the "continent". Any comments or recommendation on a better brand is welcome.

Thank you and Aloha.

If you can get higher speed memory for less, I would go for it. Backwards compatibility (ie using 2700 in place of 2100) isn't a problem, and if you ever upgrade your board have better stuff to work with.

PNY and Centon are probably similar quality, not bad, but not performance modules either... They will probably work great at stock speeds, any overclocking might be an adventure, and might not work at all.

I would have to check your board's specs, but the clerk may be right if the cpu and memory speeds are set to onlyuse pc2100 memory. Some boards allow the memory to be run faster than the cpu, and then you would see a slight bump when using pc2700 and setting that in the BIOS.

Got a link to your board's specs?

Grin

What he says.... Laughing BB Prety much covered it.

I think this is his board: http://www.fica.com/site/html/products/mb/detail.asp?cat_id=240000049&C_ID=240000346

You won't see any performance increase from a PC2100 to PC2700 on that board. But PC2700 should run in it just fine at PC2100 speeds. And if it's cheaper.... Grin

Also, nothing wrong with PNY memory... it's normally very solid RAM that will run at it's advertised speeds.... but probably not much more.

Sorry Mr. Bruin but the return E-mail from FIC said it was a special propriatory board made exclusively for Compaq and if I wanted any info contact them. Well my warranty is over with Compaq and they will not give me the time of day. Anyway since the're backwards compatible and the 2700 is cheaper I'll be looking for the best name brand out there and maybe I'll get some boost.
Thank you for the follow up. you folks really keep on top of things over there.

Oooh... an OEM board. Yeah, good luck getting anything but stock performance out of it! But, since the 2700 is less $$ than the 2100 it is the obvious choice!
