If you can get higher speed memory for less, I would go for it. Backwards compatibility (ie using 2700 in place of 2100) isn't a problem, and if you ever upgrade your board have better stuff to work with.

PNY and Centon are probably similar quality, not bad, but not performance modules either... They will probably work great at stock speeds, any overclocking might be an adventure, and might not work at all.

I would have to check your board's specs, but the clerk may be right if the cpu and memory speeds are set to onlyuse pc2100 memory. Some boards allow the memory to be run faster than the cpu, and then you would see a slight bump when using pc2700 and setting that in the BIOS.
