My possible upcoming future job will require me to work remotely, with that a laptop will be needed with a decent sized screen.

The mapping and CAD-E software I use isn't really demanding on the system as a whole. But half decent display is needed to see text details about given telco poles, cables and field equipment.

Both mapping software and CAD-E will run on first generation Pentiums without a problem.. 8mb or more of video card is needed though.. I dont need a ton of HDD space, as is all 81 Pennsylvania ALLTEL exchanges' database for mapping fits easily on 3 CDs.

I'd like to get a K8 Sempron lappy that I could upgrade later to a 64bit Turian or Athon 64. I found a few for $550-$650 new. 15" display, 256-512MB of RAM, 10/100 & wireless and 40gb HDD. Acer and Averatec were two makes.

I was hoping you guys could keep your eyes out for some deals while you surfed the web. something under $650 shipped. I missed an awesome deal on Black Friday for an HP lappy at Walmart. it was $450-500 and had a Sempron 3000+.

If you're willing to deal with MIR's, then check out places like Best Buy, Circuit City, Staples, Office Depot/Max, etc... you can find some pretty good deals there with MIR (but the atcualy price at the store is $200 - $400 higher than after the MIR).

Also check out the HP/Compaq site they have some decent deals right now.

there is a future upcoming job already? Cool!

For laptops, my AMD enthusiasm is far less than on desktops...

ack MIR's!

In the last 13 years or so, not one of my MIR has ever came back. Not from Tiger, the manufacturer, or whomever.. never ever.. and yes I did fill them out correctly.

I found an Acer 3003 series for about $600 shipped. Sempron 2600+ 256MB 40gb 15".

also a remanufactured HP ZE2000Z series similar in specs for $585 shipped. I dont think it has wireless though, but does have the ATI 200M graphics(shared).

So far Averatec, Acer and HP have new/reman systems in my price and spec range. Acer being what I'd lean towards due to the fact that my old Texas Instruments Extensa (Acer) 565CD 75mhz Pentium still runs even after 11 years and a broken display hinge

i got a gateway -i tell you for service and reliability i say there the best . and i got mine at best buy and it arrived 2 days after i order it in the store !
but from clients i have worked with i go with a gateway .
and personal exsperance . i owned one hp laptop .and it be a cold day in h_LL before i buy a second one ! there tech support was not to great and warrienty service was not up to stuff .also the unit really became a problem after the warrienty time was up . the battery stop holding a full charge . and the power cord plug on the back of the laptop went bad (loose ) and had to be reworked but its just a temp fix per the shop ! (friend of mine who did the work )said it is a very common problem on hp units !
im not saying what to buy -just telling you what i have seen and been told Smile

I'd didn't think to check Gateway.

I'm on an extremely limited budget, having to defer costs through the use of a credit card til new job pays out is the only way I can do it.

Yes, I talked to my ex-G/F and her boss, they said I'm pretty much a hire with my experience.. I just gotta contact regional supervisors and HR's. the only thing that might pose a threat to employment would be a lack of contract work with ALLTEL.

The pay would be a nice jump.. from $575 a week to close to $1000 a week. ....which in this area, $1000 a week is like being a millionaire.

Through IBM/Lenovo Employee purchase you can get a ThinkPad R51e (http://www.techdepot.com/product.asp?productID=3994341&info=Tech#tabs) for $599.00 plus free 2 day shipping. For +$35 you can upgrade it to 512MB.
