I'd get a Phenom II 940 BE or a 920. The difference between them is that the 920 is 2,8Ghz while the 940 is 3,0Ghz and the 940 is Black Edition, which means it has an unlocked multiplier, which allows for more overclocking.
Phenom II 940 Black Edition U$189,99
Phenom II 920 U$164,00

Intel Quads (Core 2 Quads) do much better than the AMD Quads, even better than the new AMD Quads clock for clock. And the difference gets even larger when you start OC'ing them.

if thats 500 just for the processor, then go core i7 920 its highly overclockable to even 4.0ghz

and if its a 500 budget for all then go YorkField 2.83 Quad Core. Best for Gaming.
