With a splitter like that you're doing just that, splitting the signal. That means you can only have a single reciplicated image. You could, for instance, have a computer displaying to a monitor facing behind a desk and at the same time output through a projector onto a screen behind you. Also the splitter might weaken the signal so it wouldn't look as great.
Unless you have 2 outgoing ports on the laptop, you probably can't run dual display or expanded desktop.
