I've been happy with my x800XT, though I was forced into that choice due to the size limitations of the Shuttle it went into.
Nvidia hasn't shown me any serious luvin since the Ti4600. When the Radeon 9700 hit its been ATI ever since.
I'd try a look at a X800 pro if your willing to buy a card right now, ATI is planning on paper-releasing a X850 right now so with any luck some shops might drop the price a little on the X800.
It sucks that you have to stick with AGP, but the truth is PCIe isn't really getting any big performance increases right now since the cards that are being made don't fully take advantage of the extra bandwith just yet.
