Stupid question but as I read your description I see this isn't clear, did you remove encryption off both ends or just the laptop? As far as the fade in out thing if your running windows xp there are some forums out there that talk about mysteriously dropping your connection if your using the built in windows XP (pre SP2) wifi connector.

I've noticed similar happenings on my home router, but ditching the xp thing seemed to work.
