At work we got a Proliant DL360 G1 from ebay for a windows update and backup server. It has 2x18GB scsi drives which will be mirrored and used for the OS, windows server 2003.

We need a few hundred GB for backup storage and are looking into every possiblity. SCSI gets expensive so we would like to stay away from that.

I was thinking of some external storage like NAS or eSata. Sata drives are really cheap and close enough to SCSI speeds.

Anyone out there have any experience with this type of setup?

I am open to suggestions and comments.

Need more info. How many users, what exactly are you using it for?

OOO And SATA isn't close to SCSI speeds in multi-user enviorments. Doesn't mean it won't meet your needs, just... well you get what you pay for.

If it is only for backup and not being accessed all day, every day, SATA might be better than good. Grin Especially if they are also mirrored.

But again, more info... I have been shown the light on the powers of SCSI when it comes to heavy duty usage, overall life expectancy, and reliability.

I'm gonna use the ugly word...Dell

We have one of their NAS servers with 4-300GB SATA drives that we use to backup our 14 servers, then during the day we archive that to the tape library. The library is a dual tape SCSI setup and it takes 40+ hours to back up everything over 10/100. The NAS does it in a fraction of the time

MORE INFO:

ms windows server 2003
images made from acronis true image 9 for servers
storage limits...at least 200GB for images of one DC and one FS/AppSrv
possibly used for WSUS server data (windows update from 2000-XP)

backups will be full backup every friday with differentials mon-thurs

so for usage probably a few hours a week

Im thinking four 200GB-400GB sataII drives in raid0+1 in some type of ext enclosure..possibly something rackmountable.

I leave anything out?
