New System Build....

Im going to be building a new system when i find around Â£110 from somewhere lol, and i was wondering what people thought of my ideas, and stuff like if it will all go together and bits and bobs like that.
Im looking at including :-

-Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD4P mobo
-GTX 295 grfx (unsure of make yet, but probably cheapest at time)
-6Gb DDR3 1333mhz Crucial XMS3 RAM (3x2gb)
-2x Seagate Baracuda 7200.10 160Gb SATA HD (run in RAID0)
-320Gb Hitachi Deskstar HD
-Intel i7 920 with stock cooling
-Xclio Windtunnel Extreme Case
-900watt Kingwin Modular PSU
-Latest Windows 7 build OS

What are peoples thoughts on that build and any comments, also if anyoe knows reasonable ways to get my hands on about Â£600 in UK let me know lol Smile

I'd go with DDR3-1600 ram if I were you, not really much more expensive. And I'd also consider getting one of the new WD Black series HD's with 32 meg cache, they beat a lot of raid setups performance wise.

The video card is probably overkill. Also, you might wanna change the RAID0 set-up for a Raptor HD or if you have enough, get two Raptors to set up RAID0 with them. It seems that the performance gain with RAID0 in every day use isn't too big, whilst a Raptor will surely get you quite some better performance. Now, if you have enough get two Raptors and set up a RAID0 for even further performance upgrade.

I agree with 3x2gb of ddr1600. they are pretty cheap now. Also, I would suggest go for the WD 640GB HD. they seem to be a very good hds. I would also say get a better cooler if you plan to do any oc.

Hmm possibly with the video card, however i do do alot of graphic design using photoshop and the like so thought it might help out in that respect too. But it will be used alot for games. Might have to think about one or two 260's.
And on the RAM side of things, does that board easily support 1600 cos ive read stuff saying i7 cores only support upto like 1333 without any overclocking and id rather not overclock unless i really really have to.
Some of the other HD suggestions are quite abit more expensive for the same size or are only run on a single drive qhich would be fairly slow compared to 2 in RAID0 config i think. Not entirely sure though :s

The thing is, the drives your planning on using are relatively old compared to the larger newer drives. What you get with the larger newer drives is perpendicular recordin, NCQ ( native Command queuing ), higher platter densities and larger cache. All of which adds up to faster drives. They may not be as fast as the two 160GB drives in Raid 0, but they won't be far behind.

If your going to go Nvidia, the GTX 260 (216) is kind of the sweet spot and a pair of them would do just fine.

Thats good point about the drives, suppose even if i did just get a single larger one to begin with could still get RAID0 later on or something. Have to have more of a look into them. Do you know if you can get the 7200.12 in 160gb versions or something cos i was looking for the smaller capacity ones to run just software and system stuff off and keep any documents on the hitachi and an external terabyte hd ive got.

Raptor 10k RPM 150GB U$179,99
This Raptor should be faster than a RAID0 of two 7200's for every day use. If you edit videos and that sort of thing, the RAID0 might be more worthwhile since it's much faster than a single drive for very big files. You could also save up for a second Raptor to make a RAID0 of those, which is what I'd do in such a high end system.
