Driving home from work today the traffic was surprisingly light on Route 80... I am in the center lane and near the edge of my peripheral vision I sense that the car passing me on the left is way too close... He was. This little silver coupe is partly in my lane and getting closer, so I brake, hit the horn, and drift a little to the right myself.

I look over and the guy looks like he is sleeping. Head off to one side, laid way back in his reclined seat. I think "no way", and slow down some more. He starts braking and adjusts to get back in his lane. He brakes when it seems necessary, but he keeps swerving. Eventually he is several cars ahead of me and I can't see him any more.

Less than a mile later traffic comes to a complete stop, and then a slow crawl. I see something happened on the left because everyone is trying to merge right.

When I get close enough I see that same guy has rear-ended a paratransit ambulance / van. The van driver is already out and seems fine, no one is inside the van, and the driver of the silver coupe is just sitting in his seat looking forward.

I called 911 for the first time ever to report the accident, and add in the fact that he almost hit other people and I am sure he was sleeping or drunk. They didn't seem interested in that part, but hopefully when they got there they figured it out.

This just adds support to my missile theory...

Every year, every driver in good standing (i.e. no points/tickets on their record) gets 2 missiles which they can use to take out complete a$$hats. This guy would have been the perfect candidate for a missile.

I was wondering what I should have / could have done. Missiles would have been great. Honking didn't help, but there isn't much else I could do. In my mind I imagined running him off the road, even before he crashed, but I don't even like my new car to get dusty... Laughing

Glad that was not worse and that you were not involved in the accident :)In wondering what you may have done ... speaking from experience call 911 if you just suspect something. Police would much rather come out for nothing than to come out to a bad situation. Because of my main job and my part time job 911 dispatch knows my voice without me even saying my name ... scary, I know Wink Wink

p.s. last time I got a ticket was 21 years ago ... that's a lot of missiles Grin

I would pay to see you in the ballet! That would be one mighty fine tu-tu! Grin

I was wondering. How is your project funded? I don't want to see a tax increase for this, that is for sure. US military surplus? Confiscated from foreign nations?

A$$hat tax... sorry man, the money's gotta come from some where. No empty promises here.

However, that tax only applies to people with tickets on their records. So clean record, not a$$hat tax. OOO And if you get a DUI, you pay triple a$$hat tax.

*edit - cut me some slack... 1st cup of coffee going down right now, was up until 3am working. Razz

Can we make this law apply to folks that dont cross roads where cross-walks are available. And to those that take their sweet old time walking across whether in cross-walk or in cross-walk exempt areas?

(exemption for disabled, those with injuries prior to crossing roads and the elderly)
