I'm working with Todd Youngblood, the nephew of the man credited with inventing the water bed in the 1960s. Todd is the inventor of the ChiliPad: http://www.chilitechnology.com - a sophisticated yet simple mattress pad that can cool or warm a bed from 48 through 118 degrees. The temperature is regulated by water flowing through silicone tubes embedded about an inch below the surface. Semiconductor chips heat or cool the water to a selected point within the temperature range, which can be set to change with a built-in timer. No wires or other electrical elements are embedded in the mattress. The ChiliPad is a great way to end nighttime arguments about the temperature of the bedroom - there is even a "dual zone" model where each side of the bed can be set to different temperatures.

sounds like an interesting invention. I wonder what the energy costs will be like for this thing though.

The website claims that "For every degree the thermostat is raised, 4% to 8% can be saved on cooling costs." and also "The ChiliPad uses up to 150 watts per control at peak and about 80 watts under normal use and works with common North American 110(V) power systems."
