Quote:
Kingston have launched the first 256 GB USB key. The DataTraveler 300 comes in a compact format (70.68 mm x 16.90 mm x 21.99 mm) and has a storage space equal to slimline hard drives. The manufacturer announces a capacity for 10 Blu-ray films. You would however need to allot 426 minutes for such an operation as the key has theoretical writes of 10 MB/s and reads of 20 MB/s. The key is in the USB 2.0 format (how long for an eSATA version?). Another weak point: it costs around $900. This is no doubt why the DataTraveler 300 will only be available as a Built To Order.

And another related issue - 'Will flash cards replace optical storage?'

Quote:
I had more or less expected Blu-ray to supplant DVDs as the removable storage medium of choice in PCs, but after reading this little write-up about what Apple is doing with its MacBooks, I'm suddenly not so sure. Optical drives are awfully large and cumbersome for inclusion in smaller laptops, and Apple isn't alone in favoring SD card slots instead. Apple has, though, traditionally pushed the industry toward dropping older standards, as it famously did when it ditched floppies. (Well ahead of the appropriate time, some might say.)

Beyond the fact that SD cards are absolutely tiny compared to optical drives, optical storage is threatened by the continually plummeting cost per gigabyte of flash memory and the rise of online software distribution. Already, as this article points out, 32GB SD cards have nearly eight times the capacity of a DVD, too. Could it be that, in a few years, the standard OS installation procedure will involve booting from an SD card? Hmm. Now that you mention it, it almost seems like a matter of time.

Hehehe... Laughing

That's a whopping storage size for a Thumb Drive, but I'm pretty sure that prices will drop drastically in the next few years... Rolling Eyes The same goes for SSDs.

How I'd love me a flash drive that big, except I'm notorious for breaking my flash drives. I'd get really pissed if I snapped a $900 one.

Me too. But even if I'd take the risk, I don't have $900 to spend on a new Thumb drive. Wink

It'll be interesting to see what happens when these large capacity thumb drives start dropping in price. I could see myself backing up all of my stuff onto thumbdrives instead of binders of DVD-R's.

EXACTLY! Smile And the data doesn't get corrupted over-time like it happens after fews years with CDs/DVDs getting unreadable. Sad
