but i do have a budget of $500 lol

if thats 500 just for the processor, then go core i7 920 its highly overclockable to even 4.0ghz

and if its a 500 budget for all then go YorkField 2.83 Quad Core. Best for Gaming.

that is correct. i7 920 priced only at less than $300 but if u say that you want to build a $500 PC then that's a different story.

Q6600 would be your best choice if you're on a tight budget.

Not really, Phenom 2 might keep up with the older C2 Quads, but they can't beat the newer C2 Quads last I checked.

Clock for clock they're still lagging the Core i7's. They've essentially become competitors of the q6600, but at a slightly better price. Intel's wolfdale cpu's predominantly outperform at a given cpu speed and can reach higher clocks on air, but cost more.

The Phenom II's are still a good investment because they offer great value for the money and it's claimed that their AM3 platform will be around for awhile (no reason not to believe this, but you never really know for sure). If I was building a new computer i would start with either an AMD AM3 cpu or an Intel Core i7 platform for future upgradability.

if your on a budget AMD is the only way to go IMO, because not only do the Intel CPU's cost more, there mobo's cost more as well.

and the 940BE's seem to OC nicely from what I have seen.(they also droped the price of the 940BE recently do to the 955BE comeing out)

The AMD 955 BE is quite probably the best quad for the money out there right now. It benches very close to the i7 920 and costs less. Not only does it cost less, but the motherboard will be cheaper as well.

Just out of curiosity, why do you need a quad?

There's not much out there that takes full advantage of all 4 cores. I'd use the money and go with a higher clocked C2D.

If you just want a quad to have it, then by all means, go forth and stimulate the economy.
