I have a 4 port SMC Broadband router and DSL. I have run out of connections. What device would I add to have 5 or more machines on the network? Only 3 of the machines will actually network, the rest just share internet access. I really like the router, it has been flawless so I would rather not have to go get an 8 port router.

You could add either a switch or a hub... A switch would be better since its basically a "smart" hub, and the price difference between the two is probably negligible.
My setup has a 4 port router connected to a 5 port switch... 5 pcs are networked and all sharing the cable internet...
DSL to router, router to upload port of switch, 3 ports left for computers on router and 5 ports available on switch?
or am I backwards?
Exactly,
And be sure to you get a switch, the price difference today between switches and hubs is almost nothing but the performance gain is very real...
Switches each get the advertised 10/100 connection whereas the hubs have shared badwidth (and the 10/100 speed gets divided between the used ports). _________________ - Jim
