Power just went out here at work... The 5 people actually at work today in my department all have a UPS hooked up to their computer... No problem, right? WRONG... Only one of them actually worked!! All the rest went out the instant the lights did... Great, great!

Reminds me of when I went to work for this company called Lindsay Communications. It was on Whidbey Island, where I lived at the time, and power outages were VERY common because of the powerful coastal wind hitting the abrupt bluffs. Well, the first day I got there I noticed that EVERY machine had a UPS.... except for the server. I just about crapped my pants. I talked to the Main Man and we took the UPS from the secretary till we got a replacement.

Jim... You can get a decent UPS pretty cheaply now. I am running a couple of these: Belkin Universal UPS Series 1200VA 6 Outlet USB and Serial Port
With that you can run a 19" or 21" CRT, a computer, and even a printer for a while plus even your network stuff. And it's only $99.00. You can get the smaller ones for even less. |

The best plan when the power goes out is to save, shut down and ask how long it'll be till the power comes back. You don't want to push your UPS too far. _________________

We have older versions of this... APC Back-Ups 1250... Once the power went out, I grabbed my coat and ran a few errands... was back before the power even came on, but was able to ship a few trade items, and finished my Christmas shopping... |
