I can see the drive connected internally via the SATA port, but does that mean it's not hotswapable (i.e. use the safely remove hardware, or plug in while the system is on)? I heard SATA is supposed to be hotswappable, but what's the purpose of eSATA then?

THe purpose of external SATA is so that if you were to go to another system that has external SATA you can get the full benefit of SATA speeds.

Like other SATA devices it should work as a hot swappable device. This will be determined by your individual settings.
