I was thinking something along the lines of what highonv8 said with a Novell login script...but the problem is, I don't want it to run when they log in...I want to have it run when nobody is here (in the evening). Could I put a script in the login that says "At 8pm, do this"...?

If you can go the login script route, somehow use that to add a scheduled task to defrag, and not actually perform the defrag at that time.

How often do you want this executed? I'm sure alot of the people who "know" that defragging will make their computer faster will run that batch script every other day or less. Have it run just once a month.

I still vote scheduled task on lunch hour for client machines, overnight for servers. The first run will take some time for sure, but following runs will be complete within a couple minutes. Have it run daily or every other day..

you can also add an "XCOPY" command to the batch for making backups. ...which will help guaranty data integrity.

Next time I'm back at my old company checking in on their machines, I'll grab a copy of the long batch that I wrote for them.

It copied about 10 directories to several partitions and network drives, then cleaned up, then defrag'd them all. Bi-weekly and daily backups. 17 years of cable customer data and 30 years of telephony sales records was never lost, even after harddrive failures. My mapping database for Alltel was also true enuff for them to call back to me to provide them witha backup due to a server failure.
