I know this isn't a complete directory, but the idea is cool:

http://portableapps.com/

Basically, this site has standard applications that have been modified to run from a thumb drive, with no Windows registry entries required.

I have downloaded NVU and Filezilla, and they work well, and look pretty much like the real deal.

Anyone have links to other sites with apps that can run from thumb drives?

Why put an app on a thumbdrive? Why not put a whole OS on a thumbdrive now that many BIOS offer the "boot from USB" support? Slap a small linux or BSD OS on tjhe thumbdrive and make LiveCDs a thing of the past Grin

I want apps on thumb drives to avoid having to install things on machines where I am not supposed to... Like work. They are getting tight on allowing anything but their authorized hardware / software.

The thumbdrive application idea is a cool one..

Good thing I dont work for some company with a policy like that.. I'd tell to shove the job somewhere they may not like or give me full access/consent to install/do what I need.

I have many sites with tons of cool s#!7. Once I get home I'll post em.

I use my drive mostly for removing spyware and other unneeded crap on other people's computer. Don't want to install over 5 spyware removal programs on everyone's desktop that I slaved over finding for myself Smile

Knight let's put it this way.... if I were to catch someone just installing stuff on the PC's at work, I'd help fill out the paper work to get them fired.

And you want me too. Do you really want spyware, viruses, and other sh*t running around the same network that deals with 9-1-1 calls??

Two other directories of thumby apps...

http://www.kikizas.net/en/usbapps.html
http://www.portablefreeware.com/
http://standalone.atspace.org/apps.html

Another nice thing to have on a thumb drive is an e-mail application, so you don't have to rely on web mail when not at your own computer.
