I was working on setting up a battlefield 2 server today and realized I needed to forward several hundred ports. My current router (D-Link 524) only allows me to forward a hand full of ports at best.

So I am looking for a Wireless VPN router that I can easily forward enough ports to create a Battlefield 2 server. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You could always lock down the computer and put it outside the routers firewall (dmz). This would probably work fine as long as you had a good software firewall program running.

Thanks for the link hack, I see a few familiar names in there. Grin

I realize I could put myself in the DMZ, but would like to avoid doing that. I am looking for a new router anyway because the one I have just sucks. Laughing

What ports? If you have a ton of them, then why not just put it in the DMZ? If you have to do things like allow port 1024 - 65535 then there is no point in having a firewall.

Cheeze,

If you had to slum it and buy a sub $100.00 wireless router, what would you get?

And here is a list of BF2 ports... Some seem optional to me, like the stats server etc...

The ports for Battlefield 2 are as follows:

UDP ports:
27900
29900
29910
27901
55123
55124
55215
16567
1500-4999

TCP ports:
80
29900
29901
29920
28910
4711

That is one horrible design on server ports. The developers should be shot!

Here is my suggestion for a ACL (Access Control List)
TCP/UDP: 27900 - 29920
UDP: 55123 - 55215
UDP: 16567
UDP: 1500 - 4999
TCP: 80
TCP: 4711

That only makes 6 lists, and covers everything. It does have some holes, but in a SOHO class router it's probably about the best you can do. (Once again, those developers need to be shot!)

As for what router? I'd probably say a Linksys WRT54GS and replace the firmware with a 3rd party (here's a good list of them: http://www.linksysinfo.org/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=21)

I use an older version of Sveasoft in mine simply becasue I don't use it for anything other than wireless, and the version I'm using let me boost the output level of the wireless.

My D-Link router won't let me forward a list of ports all in one shot like this: TCP/UDP: 27900 - 29920. I would have to forward each one individually. Rolling Eyes

Thanks for the suggestions. Grin

My basic 50$ish linksys router will forward a range of ports for you in one swoop, highly recommended.

I am not quite sure whether your router support range of ports to be forwarded. But if doesn't support this feature use DMZ one and install a Software firewall program like zone alarm or someother inorder to make your connection secure
