There is a lot that makes a server a server. It's sort of like asking... Why do you pay more for a Cadillac then a Saturn? They are both cars, both made by GM. But it's the quality of the parts and engineering that goes into them

See what you don't understand is a consumer based or desktop based system and all the components in it are designed to run no more than 8 hours a day 5 days a week. This doesn't mean they won't last longer, but they are not engineered/designed to.

All server components are designed to operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. For example look at any IDE or SATA drives and their MTBF... It's calculated in days that are 8x5. Then look at a SCSI drive, it's MTBF is calculated at 24x7.

This is done for all components in it.. the motherboard, the controllers, the RAM, the HDD's, etc... This is why you pay more for a server. Quality.

Oh, and the 8 hours a day thing... I recognize and agree with that... This thing is only on from 9AM to 5PM, 5 days per week. Probably only active (reading/writing files) less than a 1/2 hour per day.

Yea, I know... I've seen it. I'm just passing along my experinces... where are desktops pressed into server duties have more problems, and end up costing more than a real server would 9 times out of 10.
