Hi, I'm just disembarking from a long ride on the electronica train and am now looking into Other Kinds of Music. Wondering if anyone has recommendations for male singer/songwriters, preferably a bit melancholy or folksy/bluesy. So far I've found Damien Rice and Elliott Smith. I'm looking for things I might not have necessarily heard of (rather than Bob Dylan). All suggestions appreciated!

A few from me (some may be too out there Smile ):

- Jeff Buckley
- CSNY, or any derivative therein
- Iron & Wine
- Nick Drake
- Fleetwood Mac (not necessarily perfect fit, but I think you'll love em)
- Bread (& David Gates)
- America
- many many many more...

Well I seriously doubt you'd like 99% of what I listen to given the specs there, but try this:

You *must* listen to Against Me!, they're a local band and they own you.

Some Ska or Ska/Punk like Streetlight Manifesto (also Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution), Catch 22, Mustard Plug, Operation Ivy, etc.

Another Florida band that might work for you is Tiger Army. They're sort of psychobilly but sort of gloomy/slow stuff. Get Tiger Army III - Ghost Tigers Rise first, the older stuff is probably not what you're after.

A mainstream band that might fit the bill is The Cranberries, most of their songs are melancholy.

Joy Division and The Cure are pretty damn melancholy too.

You may like Bauhaus.

A.F.I.'s Sing the Sorrow might be to your liking also.

I don't listen to them, but try The Pixies.

I could go forever but that's something...

Cool Damian Rice is one of my favs!!!!

Have a listin to Jack Johnson he's from Hawaii, his music is really laid back and easy going.

You might also be interested in Hayden, he is a Canadian singer with some great songs.

Ben Lee is the new guy in town but is fast becoming a regular. upbeat 'happy' kind of tune.

Of course David Gray is always a mainstay, just some classic stuff for ya.

Better Than Ezra is a great band from New Orleans I believe. Some cool stuff by them.

The new Beck cd is always fun to listin too.

Heres some other names... Ben Folds(new solo album is good), Ben Harper, Ben Kweller, Mason Jennings, Richard Buckner.

The Black Keys is a great new rock band, might want to give them a listin if you want to get dirty.
