Beekeepers plan to remove about 20,000 bees from Eric and Jacque Scholl's home in the historic Swan Lake neighborhood.

The Scholls called for professional help after their 3-year-old son, Nicholas, was stung.

Beekeepers Bruce and Joyce Caldwell found several hives under the floor of the second story of the Scholls' house. The bee combs under the floor were about 6 inches thick and extended several feet. They first noticed the bees two years ago.

A modified vacuum cleaner will be used to suck the bees out through a length of tube and deposit them in a sealed container. The bees will be taken to an apiary, where their honey will be harvested.

The Scholls said they have been delayed in removing the bees because they needed to find a contractor who could expose the insects by tearing out walls and flooring yet stay within the guidelines of the Tulsa Historic Preservation District, which includes their 1930's home.

The family has not received an estimate of how much the bee removal will cost.

i can tell you what i'd hope for -my home owners to pick up the tab. it be around $50-$100 grand to remove and repair the home -just a ruff guess .

On the plus side, their child has the opportunity to develop a resistance to being stung instead of being allergic.

Don't know what the charge for tearing up and replacing the floors will be, but honey bees are valuable (a mite infestation has killed of most of the honey bees in many areas) beekeeper usually will remove the bees, if they get to keep them, for free.
As far as the insurance covering it it would probably depend on the policy, whether they bought the house knowning it was infested, and if not what reasonable steps the took to prevent it.
Insurance companies are usually "no problem" until you file a big claim, then the fine print is suddenly large type
