i'd immagine dirt would be pretty slow as a storage device...i will have to benchmark it against a maxtor.

Maxtor has long since had good customer service... just their drives are slower than dirt.

I'll take customer service and a drive that I know is reliable over fast kit I don't know. I've had far too much go wrong over the years, I'm happy now with a reasonable setup that works first time, everytime.

The only drives that I have ever owned and failed have been Maxtor drives. I was on a WD trip for the last few years slowly building up a collection for the home server, now I'm on to Seagate, firstly because they are reasonable for the price for their 400GB drives, and mostly because of the warranty on them. This also takes into account that I've been happy with the performance the drive is putting out considering it is a IDE and not SATA. I also have chosen Seagate for my recent Tivo upgrade.

I think many companies do a "upgrade" when equipment fails, especially if it's a couple years old.

I've had PNY upgrade 2 video cards.
G4200 - G5200 Ultra
G4400 - G5600 Ultra

Western upgraded that 200gb drive
200GB 2mb Cache - 250GB 8mb Cache (Eagle model)

Great that they took care of you.

I have 2 120s, 1 i boguht with my dell, 3 1/2 years ago, the other 1 year afetr from a friend he said it was a year old.

I just ordered 2 SATA HDs from WD and have yet to have one fail, so i recomend WD and having had 1 never fail, No need to RMA s#!7 Smile

That sounds very good service from Maxtor, but usually I would go for longer warranty, like Samsung has 3 years warranty and Seagate has 5.

Well both of my older maxtor drives are fubared. One died pretty good while using the Maxtor sutilities to do a burn in test. The other one has just crappy performance, trying to get it to fail too so I can RMA it as well.

here's a look at it's HD tach test. Confused
