Hello Big Bruin! You have got a great community here. I appreciate everyone's suggestions. Last night I removed all PCI expansion cards and wiped the respective drivers and software ( SB Live audio card and a 4 port USB 2 PCI card ) . Still no luck. I again e-mailed ATI with a copy of the machine_ check_exception dump codes. I convinved I got a bad video card or ATI just has crappy drivers.

Anyway, I'm getting so good at working on computers I can almost have every component jump on and off the main board by command!

How's it going you say? Soon it will time you changes in the real world as well. I'm burned out just like my video card and MuVo.

Hi all,

I have (almost) exactly the same problem. I've just tried putting my perfectly funtioning (in another system) Asus 9600XT in my MSI K7N420 (again perfectly functioning with the onboard VGA) and the motherboard BIOS can't seem to initialize the VGA BIOS (according to the MSI LED bracket).

I think it's the combination of a nVidia nForce motherboard BIOS with an ATI VGA BIOS that's the problem. They are big rivals. It can't be the nForce chipset, cause I guess loads of people have got 9600's working on nForce boards...

Can anyone tell me how to go about flashing my 9600XT BIOS? My motherboard BIOS is already at the most recent version.

It looks like Asus doesn't have an updated BIOS for my card: http://www.asus.com.tw/support/download/item.aspx?ModelName=A9600%20Series&Type=Latest

Should I try the BIOS from http://www.techpowerup.com/bios/? Anyone tried it?

Hi phusg... I am not a big fan of hacked drivers, and especially not BIOSes... Too risky in my opinion, and definitely voids any warranty for replacement.

Just curious for both with this issue... has the onboard video been disabled in the BIOS first? And drivers for onboard uninstalled in Windows?

Hi Big Bruin!

Couldn't find the option to disable onboard video in the BIOS, I don't think there is one with the nForce IGP, it's supposed to automatically disable as soon as you place an AGP card afaik.

I haven't uninstalled the Windows drivers, but seeing my BIOS won't even POST I can't see how that could be the issue.

I know what you mean about hacked drivers, but I tried the one linked to above and I must say it installed perfectly, it also made a backup of my existing BIOS so that I can go back. But alas, it didn't make any difference to the compatibility with the MSI K7n420 board. It was a long shot, I guess a BIOS like that is only there to optimize performance.

Looks like I'll have to take this up with MSI/ASUS... *sigh*
