Wanting to pick one up...

At least 256 and maybe even 512...

There are so many of these things out there and from what I have read they all perform about the same...

Any products stand out more than another?

Can't say for sure. (limited hands on experince) Just got a SanDisk " Cruzer mini" 256MB which is USB 2.0
Fast and small, the newest ones use a software lock, older ones had a write protect switch.
a lanyard and several extra caps were in the package.
this one was $39.95 at costco, but can sometimes be found cheaper.
I've seen some lower priced ones (around $22)but not sure of their performance.

I did a review on a JetFlash thumb drive for the site. It has been working flawlessly the whole time I have had it. Fast , simple, and so far reliable.

All flash memory (in fact most computer components) are currently in price 'freefall' (due to continuing economic slowdown, very weak summer/back to school sales, and signs Xmas may be worse) huge manufactering capability increases, running at full tilt, has lead to a huge overstock for almost all tech products, expect to see tremendous sales/rebates/price reductions over the next month or 2.
if you don't like todays price, wait a week.
