Several years back we shopped power supplies and the PSU’s in the 1k range ran from $130 to well over $200. One of the biggest draws on the power supply were the video card but video cards have downsized their power requirements as technology moves forward. Most single core GPU’s only require a good quality 500W power supply but toss on a Haswell core and overclock it until it screams having extra overhead on your power supply is a good idea. Having extra overhead on your power supply ensures that you don’t over strain the PSU and have a catastrophic failure potentially taking expensive components with it.
