we cant give you a sure amount (it really depends on how good the contact is between the processor and the heatsink) usually people will tell you a translucent "razor thin" of thermal paste should sufice. I usually put mine on thin enough I can almost read the stepping codes through the paste.

I can't really give you an idea either, just like a sheet of paper or a bit thicker.

The way I do the Shin Etsu stuff is put a strip of masking tape along each side, dab the (warmed, as is the heatsink) Shin Etsu on between them, press it down, then scrape it off level with the masking tape. Then I peel the tape off, take the credit card and trim the ends of the compound, then put the heatsink on.

I used Shin Etsu G-751 today when I swapped my 1700+ A core (10x200) for a 1700+ B core (12x200) because I was out of X-23. So far it seems to work fine, if not better. I don't think I did a good job of it the last time, so my temps were a little higher than they are now (40C load now instead of 42C).

Anyway, sometimes you just don't get things perfect.

This may sound stupid, but in the last week, my load and idle temps have climbed from 32/36 to 39/42. The daily temps also rose here from 'bout 50 to mid to high 70's.

Did you happen to have any major increase in ambient temperature that coinidentally happened at the same time???

If you are on or near the West Coast, I gurantee you did!!!!
