i went from 400 to 2000 grit, at the end i used a lot of water on the sandpaper and let the cooler slide down the sandpaper, it gave it a nice shine.

as soon as i got home i took off the cooler, wiped everything off with iso alocohol and re-applied a thin layer of AS5. then ran my comp all day. at 4:30 my temp was at 38C idle.

Latest lapping job:

As for your temp, let it run a few days, then get some X-23 instead of the possibly 0% silver AS5...

just remembered something that might be important. when i took my cpu cooler off to inspect the AS5, i noticed that the info that is printed on the chip was burnt into the cooler. i payed it no attention then, and put cooler back on after re-applying the AS5.

Yeah, the old CPUs had that horrid etched writing on them that would tear up any nice finish as soon as you put the HS on. Take it off and put it back on and you're back where you started pretty much.

As for the polish question, same thing I said in the article, Mother's Mag & Aluminum polish on a foam bonnet, buffed with a terry bonnet.

you have to clean that crap off, if it doesnt come off then sand it back off and repolish.... thats quite a buildup of crap when you can read the stepping from the cooler!
