I should be as simple as installing Mplayer and the "essential" codecs package. If you want to use another player, you should still be able to get it to work with Mplayers essential codecs package. The important codecs are the "w32codecs" Which are included with the essential codecs, but if you are using a different player than Mplayer you may need to tell your player of choice where these w32 codecs are. Also, remember that to play DVD's you need libdvdcss this is also not usually distributed with linux releases because the MPAA doesn't think that Linux users should have the right to watch DVD movies on their computers.
You should also look into installing FFmpeg's libavcodec.

The use of libdvdcss and the "w32codecs" are of questionable legality especially in the USA, so that is why they are generally not icluded and it is also the reason that most file servers that offer them are in other countries.

This MPlayer Installation HowTo should walk you through the operation.

This is on the Myth TV page... do I need this for MPEG?

http://ffmpeg.sourceforge.net/index.php

I didn't realize extra apps like Myth TV could be grabbed by yum... I always assumed it was for more "core" items. Very cool. And hey, I learned something today.

It wouldn't hurt to have FFmpeg's libavcodec installed, as well as the above mentioned MPlayer codecs., I'm not sure if MythTV includes them or not, but I don't ever remember having to mess with it to get MythTV working so I think you would be safe to go without them initially. However, since you also want to use the box for other tasks it wouldn't hurt to install them along with libdvdcss anyway.
