It wouldn't hurt to have FFmpeg's libavcodec installed, as well as the above mentioned MPlayer codecs., I'm not sure if MythTV includes them or not, but I don't ever remember having to mess with it to get MythTV working so I think you would be safe to go without them initially. However, since you also want to use the box for other tasks it wouldn't hurt to install them along with libdvdcss anyway.
