What might cause an IDE channel to go bad?

Bolt of lightning, #2 Philips screwdriver, Guacamole in the connector, flamethrower, well placed grenade, either one of my kids, the wife, anyone I have ever known, my brother-in-law who can't find the soldering iron to install his new FX card and calls to borrow mine, ummmm... Am I helping out here????

The whole channel is bad? Not the drives and/or the cables? Strange. COuld it be driver related?

Thats a tough one Trek, PCI ATA controller cards are cheap nowdays. Get one with all the goodies like RAID and stuff.

My old KT7A-Raid mobo was giving me problems before I upgraded to this ASUS A7N8X Dlx mobo. Not the whole mobo...just the IDE channels/cable's/HDD's

Now granted, I was working with a Suspect IBM 75GXP HDD. but...I tried several cables, both IBM HDD's and still I could not get a dependable connection.

So, other than me pulling the cables off, putting the cables on...off/on/off/on...

What could cause an IDE channel to go bad?

Overclocking might kill it... they rely on the psi bus, which can get flaky on overclocks, especially on older boards... Or maybe a short? Bent pin? I dunno...

Standard IDE PCI adaptors are pretty cheap... I just sold a 4 channel ATA-100 one to Dud3! for liek $15...
