As far as mainboard based RAID, the ICH-6R and 7R chipsets are HBA hardware RAID controllers; anyone who claims they are software is clueless. HBA stands for Host Based Adapter, and has very few disadvantages over an add-in RAID controller.

Actually... HBA stands for Host BUS Adapter, not Host Based Adapter. Here's a reference in case you need it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Host_adapter

RAID-0 (striping) is great for performance because it splits the read and write times in half. The most major downside is that if data corruption occurs, the drives become out of sync, and you are SOL.

Once should be all you ever allow... Laughing

But, that said I do use RAID 0 on one machine that isn't critical... Has games and benchmarks on it, and thats it. If it ever bites it, I'll just reformat knowing that nothing I will miss was lost.

Nope, you are right, and I'm not sure why I said "based" when I know it is "bus". Anyway, I edited my post to correct the typo.

EDIT: damn, see what happens when it gets too late. Typo's galore.

Reverse your last, Capitolin ;-) .

And now this corruption stuff is making me rethink this. In the last 3 days, this computer went through 4 power outages. Just when you think their over, I boot up and BAM, power goes out. All thanks to a big storm on Wednesday.

Is corruption of the data/filesystem more likely to happen using RAID0 than if you were just using an independent disk?

Also, if it does get corrupt, would the RAID0 just not work at all or would it be able to recover the filesystem as you would an independent disk?

If you have power issues, get a UPS. It's money well spent (and don't buy the cheapest one you can, get a good one).

As for corruption.. yea it happens, and more frequently than on a single drive. Most likely it's not a big deal, unless it happens that one time on the one file you can't recover, and can't afford to lose.

Which is why if you do the store the important stuff on a either non-RAID 0 drive your much safer. And of course you back them up!

I am running raid0 with three 80gb drives and haven't had a problem. I also have a 300gb drive for backup...and a external 300gb...and a 120gb backup server...alot would have to go wrong for me to lose everything.

Anyways, if you have a high end pc you must get a UPS...I got one from buy.com for $130...Belkin 1500VA...its very good. Tested it with my machine, lcd monitor, speakers and it lasted 39min before it would have shutdown automatically. With my server pc connected it lasted 26min. It's good to have one that will autoshutdown for you incase you are not around to do a clean shutdown.

Money well spent!

I missed the part where this thread got off topic and needed an injection of good information? Confused

Anyway... I need to get a UPS too... For my PC, and more important my cable modem since it is also my VoIP adaptor.

Well sucks for me because I'll need two UPSs. One for the desktop and another for the cable modem, router, and storage server. But I think EC is right, I think I'll invest in a pair of these. I'll run up to BestBuy tomorrow to check out what they have.

Don't get the Cyberpower's at Best Buy, I bought one and it failed in 6 months. Called the manufacture, and I'm pretty sure in there engrish they told me I had to take it back to Best Buy for service because they didn't do it.
