Ok so I'm going to have a bout $1,000 to upgrade my computer.
Currently im using
Lian li case
q9550 aircooled Thermalright UE Black
evga 780i mobo
4GB DDR2
evga gtx 580
Antec 1000w psu but doesnt have long enough 4pin mobo power or the bigger 6 or 8 they offer now i think.
some HDD's
I'm looking to reuse the case, videocard, and powersupply.
I would like to add in a SSD, just a budget one at the least for the OS, and like, 1 or 2 games to fit that I play the most.
guidelines:
Intel board that supports SLI, has to look decent, higher end cpu and maybe a corsair h80 or h100 for cooling, might build a real h20 cooler in down the road, i want to get to or as close to 5Ghz and like a 4.5Ghz 24/7 stable overclock for everyday useage, and 16+GB of ram. left over money could go towards a Corsiar ax1200 psu and or upgraded SSD over a small one.
My biggest problem is I don't really know what board chipsets are where it's at. I'm going to assume Ivy Bridge. _________________ evga 780i sli

I'm pretty set on an Intel Core i7-3770K. So, Z77 board?
EVGA Z77 FTW board
16GB 2x8 of DDR3 2133 G.Skill
Corsiar H80 for cooling
a 8 pin cpu power connector extension
That totals me @ $929.95 on newegg for a baseline.
How about this SSD
Corsair Force 3 120GB, its $100. I really know jack s#!7 about SSD's but know there can be weird issues with cheap drives and their firmware?

Take a look at the Intel 3570K proc, it's multiplier is unlocked so it is a good overclocker and should run you around $200 - $225 or the 3770K but that'll be more expensive around $350
Not sure on the motherboard, I'm partial to ASUS, but I have heard some really good thing about ASRock Z77, around $100
Get a good fast SSD, should be able to get a 128GB for $100 or so. Maybe not the absolute latest generation, but even the last generation will still be plenty faster than a standard drive.
Corsair H80 cooler is pretty nice
I've got 16GB DDR3 Kingston running really well
Just a few quick thoughts...good luck! |

the reason i wanted to go with the i7 3770k vs the 3570k is 8mb cache vs 6mb cache, is it worth the extra $100? IDK, but cache is king pun intended. _________________ evga 780i sli

Yea, I don't disagree Nookie, just giving then option to go a little cheaper so that cash could be put somewhere else if needed.
There's always options to go to the top end of the scale, but keeping the price down to under the $1,000 total, sometimes little consessions have to be made to reach that goal He has to make that final call |

man the socket 1155 and ivy bridge seems the way to go , but I just don't know. Maybe I shoudl wait even longer for the next intel 1150 socket, what is their deal, 1366, 1155, 2011, 1150 soon, can they just pick something and f#*@ing stick with it and stop making people buy new boards every year with the new cpu they want to upgrade
Someone set me straight _________________ evga 780i sli

I would love for them to pick a format and stick with it! I started with a i7 1366 system, "upgraded" to a 1155 system, but luckily kept the 1366... The 1155 was sold and I am happily back on my 1366 system with great performance, a decent overclock, tons of memory (triple channel 24GB), etc... _________________ Sometimes I laugh so hard that the tears run down my leg!

yeah man, I REALLY wanted the EVGA Z77 FTW board, at $300 it would be the most expensive board I've ever bought. I'm a member on the EVGA forums since I currently own a board, and am on my 5th EVGA video card. The forum subsection for the z77 board.... will make you never want to buy an evga boar ever again. That board has more issues, the non intel SATA controller doesnt work at all, so some of the sata ports are 0% functional, you cannot run 4 sticks of ram at XMP spec, or even close, you can't run 2 stick of ram at xmp unless you are super lucky, at most 2000mhz, all bios issues. The boards on like its 5th bios release and nothing has been getting fixed. tons of hardcore evga guys are pissed. It really sucks because that board is superb in every physical way, the layout is perfect imo, i love angled atx24 pin connectors, etc. etc.
I was going to go with the Asus Maximus V Formula board, it has working, superior EUFI bios, better onboard sound. But a lot of people are having physical issues with the board, bad ram slots, and s#!7.
I am glad I don't have money in hand right now. I'd be $ burning a hole in my pocket with no motherboard. I would like to get the case and watercooling loop ordered and semi installed though, radiator and res and tubing ran as much as possible and test the pump.
its actually nice, I'll be building almost an entire new system minus psu and graphics card. Then once I upgrade them, I can have a back up rig :-D _________________ evga 780i sli

Well I went a bit overboard.
ordered:
i5 3570K
ASUS Maximus V Formula
16GB Corsair Vengeance
128GB OCZ Vertex 4 SSD
Corsair Obsidian 800D Case
lite-on Blu Ray Combo DVD RW SATA(didn't have a sata optical drive)
XSPC Raystorm RX360 D5 watercooling kit with 1/2" White tubing, black compression fittings.
That's a double thick 3x120mm radiator, with the xspc dual bay reservoir and Liang D5 pump, and a raystorm waterblock. Just cooling the cpu now, but I play on adding a videocard waterblock soon, wether I get one for my 580, or upgrade the card all together. _________________ evga 780i sli
