I believe the Haiti earthquake was a result of us not getting a deal done in Copenhagen. At least that's what it sounded like Danny Glover said when he was interviewed. 
My take, don't mess with nature. Natural disasters have been around longer than humans. the more people you put on the planet, the more that are going to die from them. 
Blaming the end of the world on an overworked Mayan astronomer because he wanted to stop at the winter solstice 500yrs in the future is just silly. I mean, it's not like they had computers and printers, they had to carve everything in STONE, give the poor guy a break.
