Does (or did) Tron actually have a story?

Uhm, yes. Kevin Flynn is a computer programmer. He works for a company and designs some very successful games while another person there has designed an accounting program to track applications. The evil dude with the tracker, Dillinger, appropriates Flynn's code and calls them his own, and uses the tracker, now called the master control program, to take over the company.

Flynn does some trespassing one night with some help from friends and winds up in an experimental lab where they're trying to make a laser (it was the 80s and lasers were as big as DNA is now and as big as atomic power was in the 60s) that can teleport objects. The MCP uses the laser to bring Flynn in to the computer world.

While the movie may lack some plot and character development, it was still groundbreaking for the time and while not all of the effects are computer generated (they used a rotoscope for a bunch of stuff), it was on the cutting edge for it's time. In fact, it wouldn't be until two years later that you'd another another iconic movie emerge that used computer imagery, "The Last Starfighter." The movie and the games from Tron are all classics now, and even the sound is, for many, something to make you want to start up an emulator and play.

Don't forget that there's a Tron 2.0 FPS. It's very cool and a load of fun. I really enjoyed it and I'm not a fan of FPS games.
