I think the class switching is complicated by how you equip your characters. When you create a character you have to not only choose a class, but also a faction. And it can't be changed after the fact. I'm guessing this is because clothing options are different for each faction and powerups are unique to classes. Thus changing classes or factions in a game means changing clothing and powerups at the same time. Also, you have to equip powerups prior to entering a game, again, no swapping mid-game.
My thought as a developer is that it's a lot of extra work to handle dynamically letting users swap this stuff around mid-game and making sure they're not hacking something in via a cheat. By forcing everything to be pre-chosen, they can tell the server you're joining your complete loadout and there's no chance for a cheat to work because their central matching server is telling the game server who you are and what you have. Not your computer like in a traditional game. |
