I say go for it. If you can't afford it and can't find a way to, at least start your own business. You know php, I assume html too, so maybe a web design busness or something like that. With that you can go to college and get a job.
I hate it how it works though. Getting a job does not go by how smart you are, but by how much education you have. But you gota go with the flow.
