For serious gaming, I think you should probably eliminate the Wii from consideration. We've got one and it is quite fun in a family or party setting, I don't think it gets the nod when it comes to fast paced action games.
This leaves the PS3 and Xbox360, I have no experience with the PS3, but have a 360. My teenager plays the 360 exclusively because all his friends are on xbox live. This would be my recommendation to you as well if that's were your friends are. That being said, we did recently experience the Red Ring Of Death and our console had to be sent in for repair/replacement. We've owned it for just over 2yrs before getting the RRoD, but many experience it sooner. MS extended the warrantee to 3yrs for this problem and it was quite easy to deal with them and get it shipped. We basically registered the 360 on xbox.com and reported the problem, they then gave us a UPS label to print out and put on the box. Shipping was free and it should be back in a couple weeks. There's no doubt it's a hassle, but i've had far worse merchandise return issues with other companies. Also, the newer consoles "SHOULD" be better, but I'm not sure.
I like the PS3 for it's Folding@Home capabilities and not only is it a good BD player, I've read that it does a very good job upconverting DVD's as well. There are quite a few good games for the PS3, but if your friends aren't using it you might not enjoy gaming as much.
Ultimately, I think it will depend on what games you want to play and just how much you want to game with your friends. _________________
