In a case like that I would have done the same thing. Somebody dumped Bob over our fence under the cover of darkness when he was about 4 months, he's now a bit over 3 years. He has proven to be a great protector, very loyal dog. He takes care of us so we should take care of him. Now granted if it was going to be a temporary fix I would not do it.
